An observer might have a highly productive session, logging several deep-sky objects in a paper notebook or a general-purpose notes app. However, months later, when they want to verify when they last saw a specific nebula or compare how the atmospheric conditions affected their view of a planet, the information—though it exists—is functionally inaccessible.
Without a structured system, searching through handwritten pages or scrolling through unstructured digital notes becomes a barrier to long-term hobby sustainability. The information is present, but it isn’t “useful data”. We designed our approach to move away from mere “note-taking” toward “information management,” ensuring that every record serves as a searchable, comparable asset for future sessions.
What’s worth recording
To build a truly functional observation history, it is essential to standardize the fields being recorded. This allows for objective comparisons between different nights, locations, and equipment configurations. Based on the design requirements for a comprehensive logging system, the following categories and fields are recommended:
