Planning around the moon and the calendar

Two different questions come up when managing an observing log. A chronological list answers “what did I observe recently?” — targets, dates, and conditions in order. A calendar-style view answers a different question: “which nights did I actually get out this month, and how does that compare to other months?”

That second question matters beyond curiosity. Observation frequency is largely dictated by moon phase and weather, and planning around both is one of the more useful habits an observer can build. Deep-sky targets — faint nebulae, galaxies, and clusters — are far easier to see during the week or so around the new moon, when the sky is darkest. Bright objects like the Moon itself, planets, and double stars are largely unaffected by moonlight and can be productive even during a full moon. Laying out the month ahead — whether on a wall calendar, in a phone’s calendar app, or in a dedicated log — and marking the new-moon window in advance makes it easier to prioritize deep-sky targets for those nights and save bright-object observing for the rest of the month.

Reviewing the calendar after the fact is useful too: seeing how many nights you actually got out in a given month, compared to how many nights were clear or moon-favorable, gives an honest read on how consistent your observing has been — more useful for spotting patterns than scrolling through a list of individual sessions.

Why night mode is a recording-workflow feature, not just a cosmetic one

In many consumer apps, “dark mode” or “night mode” is a stylistic choice — a way to make the screen easier on the eyes. In the context of astronomy recording, it’s a technical requirement rather than a preference. The human eye needs significant time to achieve full dark adaptation, which is necessary to see fine detail in faint nebulae or galaxies. Exposure to even a small amount of white light from a phone screen can undo that adaptation instantly, forcing the observer to wait for their vision to recover before continuing.

Because this is tied directly to the act of recording at the eyepiece, where the toggle lives matters. A dark-mode setting buried in a menu is a workflow failure for this use case specifically: if you’re at the telescope and your screen is too bright, you need an immediate fix, not a trip through several sub-menus. A red-tinted night mode toggle that’s reachable in one tap — ideally from wherever you’re entering the log itself — supports recording seeing ratings, transparency scores, and notes without compromising the observation you’re trying to make.
