Between the raw clay state and the finished work, a piece must navigate a series of thermal events and material applications that are often high-risk and high-reward. However, a common problem in studio management is the tendency to record these complex events as a single, vague summary—perhaps just a note saying “fired on Tuesday” or “glazed with blue.”

Collapsing the entire firing journey into a single note misses the narrative of the work. A piece typically passes through multiple distinct firing-related steps: the initial bisque firing to prepare the clay, the glaze application process where layers are added, and the final glaze firing. In some cases, a piece might even undergo multiple glaze firings to achieve specific effects or to fix imperfections. Each of these steps has its own unique conditions, atmospheric variables, and immediate outcomes.

Result A rapid classification of the outcome: Success, Fail, or Needs Review.
Result notes A qualitative space for recording nuances in color, texture, or any issues encountered.
Photo A visual record of the piece immediately following the completion of this specific step.

The design of these fields reflects the reality of the firing process. The Step name is kept as free text to accommodate the unique terminologies of different studios—some may prefer “Luster Fire” while others use “Third Fire.” The Firing temperature field is essential for technical tracking, providing a numeric anchor for the thermal work performed on the clay and glaze.

The Firing atmosphere field is a critical variable in pottery. Recording whether a firing was oxidation, reduction, or another specific atmosphere allows the potter to correlate color shifts and surface effects with the kiln’s internal environment. Similarly, the Glazes used field is not just a text note; it is a relational link to your material library, ensuring that every application is tracked consistently against a master definition.

Multiple steps per piece, in sequence

A central tenet of robust recording is the understanding that one work can—and should—have multiple process log entries. In a management-focused system, the relationship between a Work and its Process Logs is one-to-many. This means that a single piece of pottery serves as the “parent” record, while every significant event in its thermal life is recorded as a “child” log entry in a chronological sequence.

Consider a typical workflow for a porcelain vase:

  1. Step 1: Bisque Firing: You record the date, the bisque temperature, and the oxidation atmosphere. You take a photo to confirm the piece survived the initial fire without structural issues.
  2. Step 2: Glaze Application: You log the specific glazes selected from your master list and any notes on how they were applied (e.g., dipped once, sprayed over the rim).
  3. Step 3: Final Glaze Firing: You record the final peak temperature, the reduction atmosphere used to achieve specific color effects, and the final outcome.

When viewed together, this sequence tells the complete story of the vase. It moves beyond a simple “before and after” and instead provides a roadmap of the piece’s evolution. This chronological view is invaluable for troubleshooting. If the final glaze looks “muddy,” you can look back at the Glaze Application log to see if the layering was different from previous successful pieces, or check the Final Glaze Firing log to see if the atmosphere or temperature deviated from your standard practice. By logging every step, you transform a single piece of pottery into a comprehensive case study for your craft.

Result as a simple three-way classification

When unloading a kiln, the potter’s focus is often on the physical pieces and the immediate assessment of their quality. At this high-activity moment, complex data entry is a barrier to consistent recording. Therefore, we advocate for a Result field that uses a simple, three-way classification: Success, Fail, or Needs Review.

This design choice is intentional. A numeric score (like 1 to 10) is often subjective and varies from day to day. A three-way classification, however, forces a clear decision that is useful for later filtering:

  • Success: The piece met the artistic and technical goals. It is ready for use, sale, or display.
  • Fail: The piece has significant defects—cracking, bloating, or glaze issues—that make it unusable.
  • Needs Review: The piece is “okay,” but the result was unexpected, or perhaps it requires a second glaze firing to fix a minor surface issue.

By keeping the primary Result field simple, the recording process stays fast. The nuance and detail are saved for the Result notes field, where the potter can describe the specific “why” behind the classification. Furthermore, this classification serves an automated management purpose. In a structured system, the overall status of the entire Work is automatically updated to reflect the Result of its most recent firing process entry. If your last log was a Success, the work is marked as a Success in your main gallery. This ensures your inventory list always reflects the true state of your studio at a glance.
