You might remember a night at a remote site as “very dark,” but was it dark enough to resolve the spiral arms of a specific galaxy, or was the transparency simply exceptional that night?
The problem with relying on vague memory is that it conflates two different variables: the inherent quality of the site (its light pollution level) and the transient quality of the night (seeing and transparency). To build a useful history, the location must be treated as a fixed “master record” with its own metadata. The app does not measure light pollution via sensors or calculate it automatically using GPS data. Instead, it provides a structured slot for the user to record a value based on established astronomical standards or personal research of light-pollution maps.
By attaching a Bortle rating to a location record, you create a baseline for your equipment’s performance. For example, if you know a site is a “Bortle 3” (Rural Sky) and another is a “Bortle 7” (Suburban/Urban Transition), your logs will eventually show a clear, data-driven picture of what objects are achievable at each site with your specific telescope and eyepiece combinations. Without this numeric rating, you are left with subjective impressions like “dark” or “somewhat bright,” which are difficult to compare objectively once your log grows to include dozens or hundreds of sessions.

A well-designed information system should reduce the burden of data entry, especially when working in the dark. This is where the concept of a “Location Master” becomes a functional advantage.
Once you have registered your frequent sites in the system, you no longer need to type location details for every new observation. In the observation form, choosing a location from a dropdown menu automatically associates that site’s metadata—including its Bortle rating—with the session record.
